Finally smart phone apps have managed to combine my two favorite activities, shopping and being lazy. That’s right, I buy clothes, home decor, jewelry, and beauty products directly on my iPhone while watching Downton Abbey.
Maybe there’s something about watching Downton that makes me feel poor and thus wish to treat myself to an ironic t-shirt for 75% off. But really, I shop on the bus, while waiting to meet a friend, and by watching all TV (and I really do watch all TV.)
The best shopping app is Haute Look (introduced to me by Curbed SF editor and bargain hunter Sally Kuchar.) Haute Look is a division of Nordstrom, and is basically The Rack App. Do you shop the Nordstrom Rack and hate everyone there? Me too! Just download the app, and buy your Caslon butt-covering cardigans in the privacy of your own home.
Gilt is another site that’s got a great shopping app, and features a very satisfying gong sound when the app is opened. The gong basically says, “Get ready to buy some $50 scented candles and browse things you can’t afford even at 90% off.” Yes gong, I will! Both Gilt and Haute Look are highly user-friendly and feature the same easy-to-navigate layout. But Gilt also offers travel deals to exotic and glamorous (and not so glamorous) locales, as well as local deals, a la Groupon. Maybe it’s the gong, but buying a facial from gold and black Gilt feels a lot more legit than a primary-colored Groupon one.
Lastly, I’m a big fan of Fancy, a daily and ongoing list of random home and clothing items, from a $15 “Cereal Killer” spoon to a $30,000 Rolex. One can “favorite” an item for later purchase, or customize their “Fancy feed” so only products of interest make the list.
Oddly, using smart phone apps to KINDA shop makes me feel like I’m getting lots done rather than appallingly lazy. I’m all caught up on Downton, and I’ve got 11 pairs of “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans.”
